Cyst Removal
/0 Comments/in Cyst /by Khaled SadekAn Outlook on Cysts
Cysts are described as encapsulated sac-like pockets of tissue, typically containing sebum, keratin, bacteria, fluid, or other material. Cysts are typically benign and prevalent to grow anywhere in your body or under the skin. At LipomaCyst, we specialise in the treatment and removal of Cysts from the skin.
Cysts appears as a smooth, skin-coloured bump on your skin. Its size can range from as small as a pea, to as large as a grapefruit. In most cases, pimples or other spots rarely grow past the size of a pea.
Cysts are not your common pimple, as they sit below the skin layer. Whilst some pimples may sting, cysts however are painless up to the point when they get infected. In instances of infection, cysts may be painful, red and tender and are much more difficult to remove completely.
Cyst Treatment at LipomaCyst
- Epidermoid Cyst
An epidermoid cyst is a slow-growing cyst, commonly present on the face, head, neck, back or genitals. Epidermoid cyst growth is a result of keratin build-up under the skin. Keratin is a protein, naturally residing in the skin, playing a key role in skin health, strength and flexibility. Epidermoid cysts are small, but when infected, they can become swollen, red or painful.
- Sebaceous Cyst
Sebaceous cysts are typically found on the neck, face or torso. Sebaceous cyst growth is mainly due to trauma or damage upon sebaceous glands that are present throughout your body. Sebaceous cysts differ from epidermoid cysts as these are usually filled with sebum: an oily, waxy substance secreted by sebaceous glands, functioning to coat and protect the skin. Sebaceous cysts can become very large and at times may be disruptive and get infected.
- Pilar Cyst
Pilar cysts are round skin-coloured bumps that develop on the scalp. Unlike Epidermoid and Sebaceous Cysts, Pilar cyst growth is a result of protein build-up in the hair follicles. Pilar cysts are usually painless, firm and smooth, but may be uncomfortable at touch when infected. If grown out of proportions, the hair follicles around the pilar cyst can fall and cause a bald patch.
Infected Cysts
Cysts can become infected for a number of reasons, one being frequent picking and touching of the cyst. Therefore, you should never try to squeeze or pop a cyst yourself at home, as it would be impossible to fully remove it.
Infected cysts are red due to inflammation. When bacteria gets inside the cyst, it starts to feed on the other components, creating a massive reservoir of puss and debris. If your cyst becomes infected, it is best to see your doctor, as it can pose serious health risks.
Cyst Treatment Available at LipomaCyst
At LipomaCyst, treatment plans are carefully curated for cyst removal, with regards to their current state.
Most cysts are removed on the same day as your initial consultation, however large complex cysts may need further investigation.
- Surgical Removal of Cysts
At LipomaCyst, Surgical Cyst Removal has proven to be the most effective treatment. Surgical removal of cysts is performed under local anaesthetic, where our lead expert creates a small incision upon the cyst, as opposed to circling around it for minimal scarring and quick healing.
Surgical removal includes removing the entire sac, ensuring no remnants are left. Complete cyst-sac removal limits the small possibility of cyst regrowth. The minimal incision is then closed with sutures.
- Incision and Drainage of Infected Cysts
In cases of active infections of cysts, complete excision is rarely possible. An initial incision and drainage may be advised, with a potential for reoccurrence in the future. The process of incision and drainage under local anaesthetic means a small incision is made to the cyst, where it is slightly squeezed of all material and emptied. Once maximal drainage is achieved, the wound is internally cleaned and closed in a way that allows for further natural drainage to occur if needed.
Summary
Cysts are commonly closed sac-like pockets, displaying as smooth bumps on the skin. They are usually harmless and benign, but can become infected. If you wish to get rid of your cysts, you may consider getting them surgically removed before this happens.

Multiple Pilar Cysts
/0 Comments/in Cyst /by Khaled SadekWhat is a Pilar Cyst?
Pilar cysts are benign growths that form around the hair follicles and are commonly found on the scalp.
Cysts on the scalp can appear isolated, but they can also be found in the form of multiple pilar cysts.
They appear as spherical bumps on the body with a skin-like appearance. You can see what a pilar cyst looks like on our pilar cyst removal surgery on our YouTube channel.
How to identify a pilar cyst?
Pilar cysts are very common and can appear on any part of the body. However, the majority of pilar cysts appear on the scalp. They are slow growing and at first not obvious. With time they will grow and become more noticeable.
When examining a pilar cyst you will notice that they have a smooth curved surface with a slightly boggy consistency. They are not typically painful but if pilar cysts are left untreated they can not only grow in size but can also become infected (see below).
Multiple pilar cysts have been reported to run in families, therefore they can have a genetic origin.
We recommend seeing you doctor if you suspect a pilar cyst. You can also send an online enquiry at lipomacyst.com or contact@lipomacyst.com and we will get in touch.
Multiple Pilar Cysts Removal
Cysts of the scalp are one of the routine cyst removal treatments we carry out in our clinic. It involves numbing of the affected area with local anaesthetic, a small incision, before removing the cyst and cyst sack. The wound is then closed and we do not shave the hair.
Pilar Cyst Removal Recovery
Scalp lesions heal well, and a full recovery is to be expected 2-3 weeks after the surgery.
The stretched skin over the pilar cyst is then reabsorbed after a few weeks.
It has been observed that pilar cysts may also develop dips in the skull where they sit. This is one of the reasons why early removal is recommended.
Cyst Sack Removal
Pilar cysts tend to have a thicker sack than epidermoid cysts. This makes the pilar cyst removal much easier and quicker, as the sack very rarely breaks. In most cases, the cyst sack is removed whole and minimally damaged, like a small marble. We recommend sending the tissue biopsy to the laboratory for analysis. That way we can be confident that there are no cancer cells present. Cancer in pilar cysts is very rare.
Infected Pilar Cysts
Pilar cysts can get infected. This usually happens as a result of squeezing the cyst, accidentally hitting it, or simply by leaving it for too long. When a cyst becomes infected, the cyst sack ruptures and the contents drain around the affected area, creating redness, tenderness and pain.
When a cyst becomes infected you may notice a discharge and discomfort on the affected area of the scalp. We recommend seeing your doctor to have the cyst removed, who will also be able to confirm the diagnosis.
Multiple pilar cysts tend not to get infected as often as isolated ones, as the patients usually request removal before the cysts grow out of proportions, due to their number and unsightly appearance. Early removal reduces the risk of infection.
Other Scalp Lumps
Apart from pilar cysts, other lesions can develop on or around the scalp. The most common are lipomas, forehead lipomas, or moles.
Multiple lipomas on the scalp tend to be less frequent than multiple pilar cysts. Lipomas on the scalp, forehead lipomas or temple lipomas usually develop in isolated lumps, as a result of trauma.
The lipoma removal technique is different than the cyst removal technique, given the difference in tissue. Lipoma removal on the scalp usually require more time, as they are often friable and adhered to the layers. A more extensive material on forehead lipoma removal can be found here.
Moles on the scalp are found even less frequent than multiple pilar cysts or lipomas. Mole removal is a simple procedure that usually involves shaving off the excess skin on the affected area.
Cyst Removal at Home
No DIY! Cysts are not pimples that can be squeezed out of the skin. They form underneath the skin layers so attempting to remove them in a non-surgical environment is dangerous. We use local anaesthetic, that contains adrenaline, which reduces the blood flow around the affected area, for a pain-free cyst removal and minimal blood loss.
Please, do not attempt to remove cysts at home! It is not advisable to remove cysts at home, as the risk of bleeding and infection is very high and can even result in injury. Get in touch at lipomacyst.com or contact@lipomacyst.com for cyst removal!

Deep Cyst Removal from Tummy
/0 Comments/in Cyst, Uncategorized /by Khaled SadekDr Khaled Sadek removes a deep cyst which has been there for many years. These are common and occur commonly on the back. They are removed from our cyst removal clinic in London. Dr Khaled Sadek is a specialist in cyst removal in London. He also specialises in the removal of lipomas.
A sebaceous cyst is a non-cancerous growth commonly found on the skin of the back or face, but can occur anywhere on the body. Just as its name suggests, these cysts occur as a result of epidermal cells, cells from the top layer of your skin a.k.a the epidermis, overgrow in a confined space. The buildup of these cells under the skin results in a “cheesy” consistency and often a pungent odor! sebaceous cysts are typically harmless and have no symptoms, but people often seek removal due to the appearance of the bump or because the cyst has become inflamed or ruptured. If you have a ruptured cyst you may notice, sudden redness, pain, swelling, and heat around the area, all of which can lead to an abscess forming. Surgically removing the cyst can cure the area, but the entire cyst sac and all of its contents need to be removed to ensure the cyst won’t grow back!
