Anal Skin Tag Removal
What are anal skin tags?
Anal skin tags are benign stalk-like skin growths that develop around the anus. An anal skin tag appears like a piece of loose, or hanging skin and can be unsightly, uncomfortable or pose hygiene issues.
Multiple anal skin tags around the anus is also a common presentation of suffering from anal skin tags. Multiple anal skin tag removal may be performed during the same appointment, depending on their size and footprint.
Anal skin tags can range in size from a few millimeters, to very large ones. The size and footprint of an anal skin tag is important when assessing the suitability for anal skin tag removal under local anesthetic.

Anal Skin Tag Symptoms?
Usually, anal skin tags do not present any medical symptoms. Anal skin tags occur as a result of piles, hemorrhoids, anal fissures, trauma, strain, child birth or bowel disease, amongst others. Men and women alike can suffer from anal skin tags.
Anal skin tags can easily be confused with other lesions, such as piles or warts. However, unlike piles, which can lead to bleeding, or warts, which are a result of a sexually transmitted disease, anal skin tags are harmless.
A thorough medical examination will be carried out to determine the nature of the lesion based on the symptoms and a treatment plan will be made accordingly. All surgeries are subject to prior medical examination.

Why have anal skin tag removal surgery?
Anal skin tag removal surgery is usually requested for cosmetic reasons.
Surgical removal of anal skin tags under local anesthetic is our preferred method of treatment. Cauterization or sutures may be used to complete the anal skin tag removal surgery and stop any bleeding that may occur.
Anal skin tag removal aftercare
Although patients can leave straight after the treatment and can continue their day as normal, they are advised to rest and take things easily, avoiding unnecessary effort. Slight bleeding is to be expected after the anal skin tag removal.
To avoid infections, patients are advised to keep the affected area as dry as possible. Antibiotics are not routinely prescribed after anal skin tag removal surgery. Avoiding physical exercise for up to two weeks post-operative is also recommended, in order to avoid wound breaking and infection from sweat.
Staying hydrated and having a fiber-rich diet to allow smooth stool passing is highly recommended. Not using harsh personal care products on the affected area and patting it dry is preferred.
